Back in May 2019 Bel was contacted by the owners of a large 1930's period property which was undergoing a huge renovation project. Set in a conservation area and surrounded by beautiful period houses from the Victorian era and many 1930's properties with character, the clients were keen to create a traditional style front garden as a grand entrance to their home.
The hugely overgrown laurels and trees were removed to open up the space and allow light into the house. The old timber fencing was removed to make way for a more elegant boundary and the area cleared ready for the garden transformation.
The area provides access from the pavement to the front door of the property but also needed to join with the driveway to one side and utility area at the other side of the building so a generous pathway was designed to connect all of the areas. Inset sandstone setts were laid within riven sandstone pavers to break up the hard landscaping and add arts and crafts style interest to the paving.
Bespoke railings where manufactured and installed along the front boundary, providing an elegant screen whilst being in keeping with the surrounding properties. Irish yew (Taxus fastigata) specimens have been planted to provide further evergreen screening and a pair of ornamental Crab Apples will grow to offer privacy to the owners.
Formal hedging provides a traditional element to the design, planted though symmetrical gravel mulched and set edged beds either side of the main pathway. Ilex crenata was selected by Bel as a good alternative to box hedging. Large planting beds then provide ample space for a pretty traditional style planting scheme of shrubs and perennials in pastel shades of white, pink, blue and purple.
A thorough transformation of an overgrown jungle into an elegant formal entrance which has been very well received by the clients and the neighbours.
